The focus should be on an arena where the project is led by the private sector. Large corporations (Japan Net, Toyota Motor Corporation) in Nagasaki, Tokyo, etc., are expected to invest a large amount of money and make plans over a long-term span. Large corporations are likely to approach social issues by shifting their focus from conventional profit-making to community and social contribution to enhance their image and branding, as well as to revitalize local communities and increase healthy life expectancy in an aging society. There are a variety of public-private initiative projects, but from this perspective (public/private/private), what kind of arena will we be in 10 years from now?
The advantages and disadvantages of public-private and private-public projects are different, so the following is a hypothetical summary.
Public-Private Projects
Advantages
・Increased consumption and employment in the region
・Increased tax revenue, increased population
・Increased creditworthiness
・Raise funds (public sources) etc…
Disadvantages
Decision-making speed (parliamentary approval process)
・Control of profits (public capital)
・Possibility of being influenced by the political phase etc….
Private
Advantages
・Strong recognition, branding
・Faster decision-making speed
・Increased corporate value, etc….
Disadvantages
・Selection of advertisers
・Depends on the economic situation of the company
・Lack of cooperation with local governments, etc…
This is just my opinion, and I am sure there are various other advantages and disadvantages. This type of arena has just started in Japan, but I believe that a better future awaits us if we proceed with reference to the examples of the U.S. and the EU, which have already made progress in this area.
