【Experience】What is the importance of flexibility?

 If you are a basketball player, you must have once admired the jumping ability of a player like Jordan. Jumping ability is one of the most important indicators of a basketball player’s athletic ability, and in the NBA’s entrance test, a player may be eliminated from the selection process based on his athletic ability alone. I had no jumping ability myself, but I would like to write about three efforts I made to improve my jumping ability by 10 cm by consulting a trainer and watching various videos.

①Increased flexibility of the shoulder blades
The key factor in maximizing human power is how large the range of motion can be, and increased flexibility of the shoulder blades increases the range of motion of the arm swing before flying, leading to jumping power. The greater the swing, the stronger the force, just like the principle of the “pendulum” science experiment.

Not only did I clearly feel the power of arm swing in my leaps, but my wingspan also lengthened by 3 cm, and my ability to loose balls, catch, and block increased, which I realized is essential flexibility for basketball.

②Increase flexibility of the iliopsoas muscle
I also stretched the iliopsoas muscle after bathing in order to increase the range of motion of the lower body, the same as the shoulder blades. I realized that by increasing the range of motion of the first two steps before jumping, I was able to accumulate maximum power, leading to greater jumping ability. I also gained the ability to attack the rim in full-court 1-on-1 and other situations because my ability to propel myself vertically also improved. ③Good Sleep
Although it is very important not only for jumping ability but also for human life, there were times when my body remained in a state of tension to improve jumping ability and I could not get tired or stay awake. As a matter of course, staying healthy leads to better performance, so not only sleep but also diet is important.
